My father was in the Home Guard. He was issued with a rifle and one bullet! Everyone used to joke that the bullet was to shoot himself with if the German paratroopers came. Also, part of his duties was to patrol the Cricklewood water works, alongside which ran railway lines. On cold nights, when the locomotives stopped at the railway signals, he used to warm himself on the footplate of the locos.
