Joan was a Red Cross nurse. In TTA before war then called up to the 5th Staffords. Couple married after the war. He was part of the D Day landings. His brother was 41 commander and he was killed in D Day. He was 23 years old. They met because he was injured, she nursed him. He had shrapnel wound and suffered with his back which continued all his life. Dad heard of his brother's death whilst at war. Awful for mother. Records didn't get back quickly. Another Uncle was a prisoner in Japan. Mum made 6 folders to pass onto family. Parents both regularly visited Normandy 16th Branch of Normandy veterans. Joan's training from 14 she was ruled with a 'rod of iron'. Remembers dancing with GIs.
