online resource

William Denton was from High Green near Sheffield, South Yorkshire. He worked as a miner initially before becoming an apprentice NCK excavator. After this, William became a Field Service Engineer Inspector during which time he travelled all over Britain.

William enlisted at the outbreak of WW2. Initially he was part of the Yorkshire and Lancashire regiment but was soon transferred to the Royal Engineers Mechanical Equipment due to his background.

William had a lot of postings during his time with the Royal Engineers. Bulldozers wee commonly used to open up the front and this is what William was mostly involved with.

Eventually William became Captain and Acting Major. He went on the serve in France and the Middle East. William never really spoke about his experiences. Distressingly, being part of the bulldozer regiment, William was involved with digging mass graves in Belsen Concentration Camp. Michael (William's son) brought in a number of documents and photographs that his father kept from WW2 including photos of bodies being interred into mass graves (see here).
