Memoirs of Albert Clegg: A Royal Marine's Journey
Albert Ernest Rupert Clegg (the contributor’s father, known as Charles) was born in 1918 and joined Royal Marines in 1935. He was on HMS Frobisher in 1939 as a Signal Operator. He trained at Dover Castle and Hauling Island. He went to South Africa and, in 1941, to Crete where his ship was torpedoed. He was injured on Crete in a motorbike accident, and evacuated by walking over mountains (despite being dive-bombed). He returned to Egypt with a septic knee from shrapnel. He was sent to Ceylon for cable laying, but contracted dengue fever, so he was invalided and returned home in February 1944. He was promoted to sergeant. He served in Fleet Reserve 1948-1953 but did not receive pension.
Among the objects is a cessation of hostilities telegram, and a letter regarding life under occupation in Guernsey.
