Mathew John Scott from South Shields was a driver in the Royal Air Force he was posted to Durban, North Africa and Corsica. It was in Corsica that he befriended a Corsican family (photo). John was fluent in French, he had some knowledge of German and Arabic.

He sent and received letters from his American pen pals who worked in newspapers in Cincinnati in America.
