The contributor brought along a number of his grandfather's possessions including wartime photographs, a typewritten account of the D-Day Operation, maps, a book, two letters from Lord Harrow, and a record of service.

The grandfather, Major Stidwell, was in the Army and participated in the North African and Italian campaigns. Around the time of the Battle of Salerno, he was missing in action.

After returning to the UK, he was selected for special duties for D-Day as a member of the Combined Operations. Major Stidwell fought in France, the Netherlands, and Germany, taking part in the occupation of the latter. He returned to the UK in 1946 and was awarded an MBE for his services.

Major Stidwell passed away in 1985 when the contributor was seven years old.
