MacArthur signing Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 18:59 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

My father, Eddie En Po Tseng, was a war correspondent present on the USS Missouri at the time of the Japanese surrender. A photograph, signed to him personally by General MacArthur, was presented to him as a memento of this important event. There was only one telephone link for the journalists to the outside world. The war correspondents drew lots to be the first person to broadcast the news of the formal Japanese surrender to the world. My father was the lucky one.
