Lord Darnley and the Christmas Tree

online resource

In 1943 I was 8 years old. As my mother was a maid at Cobham Hall, she asked Lord Darnley if she could have a Christmas tree. He had a Christmas tree sent to her, but it was 16 feet high, and our room was only 8 feet high! We had the top part, and let the neighbours have the rest. You couldn't get Christmas trees during the war.

When my mum told Lord Darnley what she'd done, he was very impressed that the tree hadn't been wasted.

When I was 8 and in hospital, Lady Darnley had a friend who lived in Cobham Village, and she used to bring me comics in.
