Looped gold solidus of Chlotar II (effective in S. Gaul 615-629) mint of Marseilles. Wgt. 4.66 grammes.Obv. bust r. close but not identical to a coin in the Hague with similar rev. legend and obv. apparently reading CHLOTARIVSREXPAVC; of the legend on this coin only C - - - ARI(?) and deliberately obscrue termination (?) VSR (tilted) r (or E) X(?)VI remain, but again it seems to mask the king's name with the imperial PP AVG quite exceptionally for Chlotar's coinage, which is usually explicit. Plain border.Rev. in better but slill slovenly letter, VICTVRIA (clockwise) CHLOTA.. (anticlockwise from top). Cross on globe, AM (Massilia reversed) at either side with XX below. Enclosed in beaded circle.Solidus of Marseille of Chlotar's reign, with reverse legend in second form. c. 620, i.e. a little later than the Sarre Chlotar. Rigold by letter 27/11/66: 618-22 in spite of bad obverse legend and reversed MA it would seem to be an orthodox and not imitated coin, of normal fabric with vertically opposed dies. It is mounted head up with a barrel-shaped loop, decorated at ends and middle with pairs of twisted filigree wires sandwiched between beaded wires. Beaded wire around base of loop where it joins edge of coin. Coin of good yellow gold, weakly struck and somewhat battered though not heavily worn. Loop slightly worn and not visibly different in colour.Measured density gm/cc 15.6 TotalExp. density Coin Loop 18.2 Surface analysis:
