The contributor's father, Leonard Foster Hartley, was born in Hull on 3 October 1916 and died 6 December 1977. Leonard served in the RAF from 9 March 1938 to 7 November 1945. Leonard married the contributor's mother, Bessie Ann Humphrey, on 28 September 1940. The contributor was born in Hull on 11 November 1941, and first met his father when he returned from service in 1945. The contributor asked his father "Who are you?"

Leonard left a series of notebooks which the family digitized. Leonard had kept his diaries secret, and his wife made them available to the family. The contributor's brother has published these notebooks - we have suggested that he sends this into the Their Finest Hour Project.
