At the end of the war in Burma my father had been in Rangoon for a long time, waiting for a troop ship to bring them home. They were desperate to come home and bored with waiting with not much to do. Eventually they got a boat and were on the desk waiting to cast off. There was a delay and eventually a 'group' (don't know how many) of Scots in kilts came marching along the quay to the sound of bagpipes. There was a lot of cheering from soldiers all along the railings on the ship, as they came on board and the ship cast off. One of the Scots Soldiers must have had dysentery but hadn't reported it as he wouldn't have been allowed on board. Would have been in a lot of pain. Two days out to sea he died and was buried at sea.
