Law and the Contemporary Novel, Northwestern University (Pritzker)

In this class we’ll discuss depictions of the law in popular fiction and how those depictions affect perceptions of the law. We will read contemporary novels on a number of different topics that all relate to law in different ways, and we will consider the impact those novels have on perceptions of lawyers and the law for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. Students will learn how to analyze texts through close reading, evaluate those texts through both writing and active discussion, and engage in oral presentations. This information has been collected for the Post-Discipline Online Syllabus Database. The database explores the use of literature by schools of professional education in North America. It forms part of a larger project titled Post-Discipline: Literature, Professionalism, and the Crisis of the Humanities, led by Dr Merve Emre with the assistance of Dr Hayley G. Toth.
