We will examine representations of law and legalism in some contemporary and canonical fiction. Themes addressed include the treatment of political and legal outsiders in law and literature, the roles of empathy, moral principle, and epistemic doubt or certainty in legal decision making, the quality and feel of the lives, as represented in literature and law, of legal subjects who receive less than the full or equal protection of law or who live their lives in opposition to it, and the nature and limits of the virtue of loyalty in legal relationships.
This course has been offered by four different instructors over the years; each has since left the university.
