Kentish disc brooch
Silver-gilt jewelled disc brooch (Leeds Class Ib). Diam 4.4cm. Central boss of white paste set with a tiny cabochon garnet in plain collar. Radiating from the beaded wire rim of this boss, three wedge-shaped cells with flat garnets on chequered gold foil. Between them, towards rim, three subsidiary circular cells, now empty and one indeed cut clean through backplate. Flanking these pairs of semicircular heads, joined below by ridge, whole encircled by carved ridge, a band cut out in three very long and three very short cells now empty, and the edge of the brooch decorated with 'light-and-shade' work, alternating plain and beaded sections. The rim is very worn. On back, the usual simple pin catch and attachment for missing pin and coil.
