My father was in Algiers and he took a commanding officer's daughter to a hillside overlooking the town, reading her poetry. He was reprimanded and she was sent elsewhere!

He mentioned that a red-headed Welshman of his company in North Africa was seen disappearing on a camel, never to be seen again. Maybe there are some red-headed Bedouin around?

He was stationed on the Gothic Line in Rimini, where he met my mother, by leaving a book in the bar where she was working - returning to reclaim it and asking her out. They married in 1946.

He was an interpreter, speaking Italian, French, German - he befriended a German POW, they kept in touch and the families are still in touch.
