Joseph signed up for the army early in the war- in 1940. He joined the artillery. He was with the 8th army. He started in North Africa. He was briefly in Palestine. Then he went to the east coast of Italy for the rest of the war. He did not participate in direct conflict. His was more of an administrative role. He was in the rear headquarters. He spoke about the war only in general terms. He never told in detail what he did. He was into photography. He wrote letters to his mother during the war.

Margaret was a nurse in Liverpool. She attended to injured troops coming back to Liverpool. She also did not speak about her experience in detail. Her father was in World War I, possibly in the infantry. He was wounded and became blind after the war.
