Johnny from Bootle
The contributor's mother always mentioned an evacuee who stayed with her parents during World War 2 in their house in Ithon Road, Llandrindod. He was called Johnny and he came from Bootle, but that is all Mum remembers. His name John McClelland.
From the diaries of his Great Grandfather "Bill" (William James Powell) the contributor has found the name of the evacuee who stayed at the house of his grandparents Walter Harold Powell and Gwynedd Constance Powell (nee Peirson Jones), at The Croft, Ithon Road Llandrindod Wells, Radnorshire, Wales. Their daughter Liz would have met Johnny when she was younger because after the Second World War he visited The Croft but she only knew him as Johnny from Bootle.
It looks like Johnny came to live with Walter and Gwynedd on Friday 20th December 1942, from 6 Hankey Drive, Bootle. Maybe his school or church was "St Monica's off no 12".
Johnny visited home a few times, and visited places with Walter and Gwynedd and Bill, eg Maesygarn, Llanigon the farm Gwyn's mother Lucy Gwen Peirson Jones ran up in the hills.
Johnny may have left Llandrindod finally on Thursday 29th July 1943. There may be other mentions of Johnny in these diaries which are kept in detail from 1910 to WJ Powell's death in 1948.
