John Gottig was an RASC mechanical engineer working on cars and lorries. He served from 1935 to 1960 in East Africa, Ceylon, and India during the war. He earned educational qualifications throughout his service. He also served in Germany post-war. He passed away when the contributor was young, so they have limited details of his service.

The contributor's maternal grandfather, G. E. Worham, was a PoW at Stalag 9C and kept a diary of his internment but did not discuss it after the war.
