When I was a child, I lived in a village just outside Brighton. Rationing meant shopping at the local shops with the ration book, - you could only shop at a registered shop, and couldn't be served without the book. I have never forgotten the 2oz weekly butter ration, - this much! (Jean showed the size of it by holding her finger and thumb apart). I always went shopping with mother, but later, when I was a bit older, "we were entrusted with the ration book and went to the shop on our own". We were very proud of that.

The disagreeable thing was having to have a gas mask, and having to have it with you at all times. They were horrid, smelly things.
