This is a story told to me by my Uncle Ivan (Ivan George Lovejoy (4 Feb 1922-July 2016)) about 2 months before he died. He was under attack in Italy (I cannot remember the place or date) and his platoon was wiped out. Ivan survived beneath a pile of dead bodies. He waited around 8 hours until dark and then found his way back to Allied lines. (I had the impression that he may never have told this story before, and was very emotional).
