Sword: length 83cm, but tip of blade and tang missing - original length c. 87.5cm (c. 34 1/2 inches). Width of blade 5.4cm. Traces of wooden sheath with sheepskin lining - smooth skin and hairs visible underneath wood. In one place there is something above the wood that may have been a decorated leather cover, or it may simply be the remains of a stitched seam (on the side not drawn). The lower guard impression is clear, 1.2cm wide, and surviving traces show that the cross-piece was of wood. Once again it seems to have been put on over leather traces of which again survive on the grip.X-ray no. 24: The blade has little metal left, but enough shows to indicate a pattern welded construction, with 3 composite rods in double assembly, standard pattern.X-ray could not be located in 2006-7. – D.H.
