Sword: originally broken at point, tang now snapped in two. Length 75cm. Blade rather broad, 5.5cm at top. In rather better condition than most. Not much trace of scabbard and it may have been of leather except along edges where there are traces of wooden stiffeners. The impression of the upper and lower guards clear: both width c. 1.5cm. The top of the tang has been hammered and expanded to secure the pommel. Pommel and guards were of some perishable substance but no trace survives. The handle was of wood and parts survive.X-ray no. 12. No trace of pattern welding. A curious lump on the handle shows rather solid in X-rayX-ray could not be located in 2006-7. – D.H.From Sarre or Bifrons. – B.B.
