Iron shield grip fragment with wood remains

Fragmentary grip, length 13.5cm. Handle part, showing upcurved edges (broken) and lozenge-shaped terminals pierced by disc-headed rivets. Breaks at either end of lozenge suggest it may have been grip of 'long' variety. In handle part wood remains of bar running lengthwise: at ends wood runs across grip, i.e. we have impression of board.Slightly sandy - poss. Gilton.
