Shield-boss, height 9.2cm, diam. 15.7cm. Rather a high carinated boss with convex dome above ridge carination and sloping waist, flange 2.5cm broad. On top a bronze plated stud (bronze over top and sides) or possibly a solid bronze stud (though this unlikely). Top of stud covered with little bumps which are probably caused by impress of iron corrosion beneath. On flange 5 disc-headed rivets, four iron, one bronze which has a silver disc soldered to top. The boss very corroded and covered with 'sand', so the Gilton provenance a virtual certainty. Slight traces of wood and leather on underside of rim.The Mayer card index [for M 6193] says 6 1/2 inches diam., too big for this boss; similarly MS Diary [Liverpool] dimensions are also for larger boss. Mayer card attributes this to Grave 5. Therefore, probably not M 6193.
