Iron angon

online resource
posted on 2021-10-27, 13:27 authored by Helena HamerowHelena Hamerow
Iron angon, now in two joining pieces, length 78cm in very bad condition, heavily corroded and now flaking and fragile, with stones and soil adhering through corrosion, thus distorted. The point is intact but no surviving trace of barbs, shaft apparently long and narrow, terminating in split socket, bottom broken off apparently. The present end of shaft may have had an iron band around it, c. 4cm broad, to reinforce the socket, and this band seems to have been inlaid with bronze. Traces of bronze survive suggest a broad bronze band near base, and perhaps another near top. But whole thing too far gone to be certain of exact nature of inlays.cf. Arch.Cant. VII, pl, xiv, no. vi for original sketch.
