Organized around readings from literature (novels, plays, creative nonfiction, or film), the Interprofessional Seminar in Ethical Values and Professional Life enrolls students from different professional or graduate schools who together examine issues of common concern to the professional in practice, whether doctor, lawyer, nurse, scholar/professor, architect/planner, or executive. Readings serve as springboards to rigorous group discussion and also to students' reflective consideration of their own professional education, formation, and anticipated life in practice.
Learning objectives: Participants will be able to:
• Critically read and analyze works of literature and other art forms for their content and relevance to ethical values and professional-life choices
• Engage in cross-disciplinary and interprofessional conversation about issues of common concern in the preparation and practice of professionals
• Reflect on their own professional formation, education and ethical values
• Critically examine different professions' systems of education/training, particular cultures and customary practices
• Exercise and refine perspective-taking skills in responding both to texts and to classmates' experiences
Each seminar section enrolls 12-14 students from at least two of UVA's professional schools or doctoral programs—medicine, law, graduate humanities, graduate nursing, graduate architecture, and graduate business. Seminars are team-taught by faculty who represent different professional preparations and/or schools. Seminars meet five times over the entire academic year (September through April), usually in the evenings and in professors' homes. Participants earn one academic credit.
This information has been collected for the Post-Discipline Online Syllabus Database. The database explores the use of literature by schools of professional education in North America. It forms part of a larger project titled Post-Discipline: Literature, Professionalism, and the Crisis of the Humanities, led by Dr Merve Emre with the assistance of Dr Hayley G. Toth. You can find more information about the project at https://postdiscipline.english.ox.ac.uk/. Data was collected and accurate in 2021/22.
