Bronze pin, length 3.6cm, but tip of shaft broken off (evidently already in Faussett's day). Flat disc-headed with cast cells for garnets on either side, now empty of garnets but retaining chequered gold foils. Below head a pair of transverse grooves, and near broken end a slight thickening, as for a spear-shaped point, now lost. At some time in the past this pin has been ruthlessly scraped with a knife (not by me!) probably to test whether the pin really ivory as Faussett said: it is not. In two pieces when sent. The catalogue number M 6553 is used for copper-alloy pins in Graves 31 and 103 and bone? pin in Grave 172. – D.H.
