Mary served as a member of the Women's Voluntary Service (WVS) in Derbyshire later retiring as County Organiser in the 1960s. After being a volunteer in the UK (running a motor pool & creating the KitBag clubs) she served overseas from 1944. Mary ran the first canteen in Cherbourg after liberation and travelled with the 21st Army Group through France and into Germany. She ran various canteens & libraries supporting the Armed Forces in Hamm & Dortmund until May 1945.
