posted on 2024-06-05, 19:30 authored by Their Finest Hour Project TeamHenrik Pozniak (father) turned 21 on 2 September on the (second) day of the German invasion. He was deported by the Russians & sent to a gulag.
Once war broke out (Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union) he was sent via Iran to Iraq to train for two years in Ander's Army for the British (Polish 2 Corps).
Promoted to Corporal, sent to Italy during the Allied invasion. Owns a Monte Cassino medal but was not at the battle. Served in Battle of Bologna.
The pictures (#No. 3) depict his time in Iraq.
The war ended as he was stationed in Italy. He was relocated to The Netherlands, where he worked on the railways, before moving to London. He then joined the extensive Polish community in Slough before meeting the contributor's mother.
