online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 20:13 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

The contributor, John Hagen, found a collection of war-related documents and photographs while cleaning out the house and garden shed of relatives who lived in Oxford. The documents belonged to one Lt. Harold Alexander Welham-Jones whom, according to his service record, was born in Oxford on 23 May 1914.

John Hagen also discussed his own parents' experiences of the war. His father, George Douglas Hagen, had been a civil servant but joined the Royal Air Force during the war. He was sent abroad, but his ship was torpedoed. Many of his comrades were killed but he was rescued. He was then stationed in South Africa. The "Spot a Plane" poster belonged to George.

John's mother, Olive Harriet Hagen-Mills, worked on the Home Front as an air raid warden. John emphasises that her experience of the war was just as bad as that of her husband. She had the harrowing task of having to climb through the rubble of destroyed buildings.
