Modern description

Date Excavated: 1973-74During the construction of a sun porch to the south side of the extant mill, a grave was discovered in 1973 (Webster 1974, 179; Parfitt 2003; Richardson II 2005). The owner sold the finds to the Ashmolean Museum in 1974 (MacGregor & Bolick 1993, 20, 78). Excavations carried out for the museum by David Brown and Martin Welch in the same year relocated the grave and produced 14 beads (Webster 1976, 164).Webster 1974, 179:A woman’s grave (c. 600-620) containing a gold and garnet brooch of a type intermediate between the plated disc brooch and the composite brooch, beads and a crescentic gold pendant were discovered during building. [...] The finds are in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.Webster 1976, 165:D. Brown and M. Welch excavating on the site of this cemetery for the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, uncovered one grave, from which a jewelled brooch and beads and been unearthed in 1973. A further 14 beads were found.
