Great-Grandad Harry's Diary: A Journey Through Captivity

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 16:08 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

My great-grandad Harry was an infantry soldier during WWII. On 28 May 1941, he was captured in Crete, Greece, by the Nazis. Harry was then held for three years at a German prisoner-of-war camp. He was released on 13 April 1945.

Before the Nazis captured him, he wrote a diary about the war and where he was going to be taken to fight. Harry carried on with this diary during his time at the camp. In his scrapbook, he loved to draw comics and write poems. The scrapbook shows things like the currency they used to buy things at the canteen and the menu for Christmas dinner in Germany. Also, it shows the birthday cards he received whilst at the prisoner-of-war camp.
