Opaque black glass spindle whorl, decorated with marvered white trails, diam. 4cm. Base flat, low curved dome, central perforation made by glass-maker. The inlay is very deteriorated and may have been yellow. It consists of a curvaceous zig-zag trail around max. circumference, with just above it a thin girth trail; then a gap, then a group of 3-4 thin trails, with starting blob visible in one case, and untidy ends where the thread of opaque glass has been cut off and has fallen still hot across the glass. A further thick opaque trail of congealed set of trails around the hole.Roach Smith attributes this object to grave 30, but the original label says \S.Would 1773\" and grave 30 was excavated in 1772. The whorl does not fit the description for grave 30 anyway. Roach Smith made a careless mistake. Only grave 172 qualifies and only grave 172 had large 'earthen' disci. N.B. he [Faussett] always calls opaque glass 'earthen'."
