In 1941 in York during rationing Gladys and several other families knew an RAF corporal who would get them things they needed on the 'black market'. The corporal kept a black notebook containing his customers names and addresses. When the corporal was arrested by the city police in York many of the families were worried and disposed of the offending items. Gladys tipped a lot of soap powder she was storing into the River Foss. This created a lot of foam for a time. The police never came to interview Gladys about the incident.
