Frank Morgan was called up in 1941. He and his brother Leonard worked for the Gas Board, which, for the first year of the war, was a "protected occupation". He joined the Royal Engineers, and Leonard was enlisted with the Royal Artillery. Frank was at El Alamein, where he and his unit were tasked with clearing the landmines and widening the track so that the tanks could go through the minefield.

One night, they drove into the darkness in a lorry and stopped along the track. Sgt. Weller told Frank and some others to jump out and start work, as they had done mine-detection before. Sgt. Weller ordered the truck to go a couple of hundred yards farther on with those who had not done mine-detection before. Tragically, the lorry drove over a landmine, and all still on board were killed.

Twice—on the 25th and the 50th anniversary—Frank went back to El Alamein to take part in the commemorative service there. He never forgot Sgt. Weller.
