Frank Hayter was a Royal Marine. He served on HMS Nelson for an unknown length of time. He had a long career, and was known to have been in Turkey in 1925. He primarily served as a driver and instructor for lorry drivers.

His wife's brother, whose surname was Barton, died on the Barham in 1945. Another uncle, possibly Dougie Barton, fought in Normandy in 1944 and was killed that summer.

They lived in Portsmouth before and after the war, but the family was relocated to Wiltshire during the war years.
