Forgotten Heroes: A Reserved Occupation Engineer

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 20:12 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

James, the contributor's grandfather, was an important engineer. Because of this, he stayed in the UK instead of being sent to the front; he was in reserved occupation (without a uniform). Because he was not wearing a uniform, he was known as a coward person. He was serving at the "Home Guards" when he was not busy with his engineering service. The contributor explained that the book 'They Also Serve' mentions his name only once on p.164, as he did not want his name to be mentioned several times. James served at the 39th Cheshire Battalion Home Guard. The contributor wants this story to be recorded because Home Guards are almost forgotten.
