Reg Bromhall was a Flight Sergeant in the 92 squadron. On 7 January 1942, he was flying with a small formation of spitfires. When it encountered a large group of German aircraft. The squadron's diarist said it was the first prepared to stay and fight behind British lines since El Alamein. He was shot down along with Sergeant H Paterson. Neville Duke the famous World War 2 ace says the German planes were 109s. He also mentions they were from II/JG77. 2 German Pilots claimed they shot down spitfires that day Oberleutnant Lutz-Wilhelm Burckhardt (his 54th kill) and Leutnant Ernst Wilhelm Reinert. (his 105th kill) It was was of these 2 that shot down Reg Bromhall.

Sgt Bromhall's life was saved by his parachute and in later life, he became a member of the Caterpillar Club for people whose lives have been saved by parachute. He was badly injured in the action and eventually had his leg amputated.

Another member of the squadron at the time was Paul Brickhill who wrote The Dam Busters, Reach for the Sky and The Great Escape.
