Talking about her father and his brother and two maternal uncles and their role in the war. Suzanne's two uncles (her mother's brothers) were both in the RAF. Both were fighter pilots and were shot down and killed during the Battle of Britain, probably over France.

Her father's brother was also in the RAF and may have been a Squadron Leader. He flew in bombers, survived the War and stayed in the RAF after the war. He became an Air Attaché in the Lebanon and may or may not have been a spy. Later, he worked for the Road Research Laboratory and is responsible for the invention of mini-roundabouts.

Suzanne's father wanted to join the RAF and learned to fly. He was turned down because of medical problems. He joined the Home Guard in Colchester and later said it was exactly like Dad's Army. The family was evacuated away from Colchester. They had a metal-topped table in the kitchen where they sheltered when they heard buzz-bombs (probably V1 rockets).
