William had a long record of service in several parts of the navy. He was originally in the Merchant Navy 1928-35, he was called up to the Royal Navy 1941-46, then finally served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve 1946-67. William recorded his life and wartime experiences in a diary, which was subsequently reproduced by the family. After the war William was mentioned in dispatches for his seamanship in the Gulf of Aden in 1946.
