One of my earliest memories as a small child is having to shelter under the stairs with my parents at 26 Kensington Road, Weston-super-Mare when there was an air raid. I can still hear the bangs which, at the time, I thought were exciting. One particular night an incendiary bomb came through the roof of the house and landed on the bed in which my parents had been sleeping. Thankfully it failed to ignite but I still have a very strong memory of fire wardens going up and down the stairs to make sure everything was safe.
