"When we entered Vienna, I remember how quiet it was - completely deserted. We stopped our vehicles for a brew up, and, after a while, I noticed a front door slowly open. An old lady teetered towards me. She looked up at me and asked in English 'Are you English?' When I said 'yes', she replied 'thank God' and embraced me. Then she started to cry and fell on her knees. Two younger women then came out of the same house....... I learnt that the old woman was English and had married an Austrian lad in 1922 and had lived in Vienna ever since."
