Embroidery of Signatures from RAF Gravesend

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 16:39 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

This contains all the signatures of those on duty at the Signals Traffic Office at RAF Gravesend on 6 June 1944. Originally made as a chair back, it was sent to the contributor's parents by Peggy Hills, whose name is also included on the embroidery.

The contributor speculates that it was created as a memento as it was evident that a significant event was approaching. It features the signature of Cyril Whaley and Peggy Mellish. Potentially, it was created by the office members signing their names on the linen, with these names then embroidered over.

RAF Gravesend was part of RAF Eleven Group, Fighter Command. They served as a forward base for Biggin Hill. Eric Fletcher was a wireless operator, Grace Hopkins a telephonist. Grace Hopkins was trained in Worcester.

It is accompanied by a letter written by the daughter of Peggy Hills, written in 1995.
