I was born in 1940 but I have clear memories of being put to bed with my older sister (now deceased) in the family air raid shelter. We lived in Hillingdon near Uxbridge, so there was a lot of activity overhead as the Air Force planes flew towards London.

My father Sydney West had the prescience to move his family out of London. My father showed much initiative in growing and providing good food for us - meat and vegetables. He was employed as an accountant by HMV that was manufacturing shells in Hayes.
