Extract from the opening of the letter:
Quorundam ad nos relatione peruenit Cosmam, qui ex monacho monasterii sanctae Luciae a decessore uestro uenerandae memoriae Maximiano in ecclesia Syracusana factus subdiaconus atque a uobis postea in possessione quae Iuliana uocatur presbyter dicitur ordinatus.
‘A report by some people has come to our attention concerning Cosmas. He had been a monk in the monastery of Saint Lucia until appointed deacon in the church of Syracuse by Maximianus, your predecessor of venerable memory, and afterwards he is said to have been ordained as a priest by you in the possession called Juliana.’
