II Id. Oct.
'14 October. The feast of Saint Callistus, pope, who, in the persecution of the emperor Alexander, long racked by hunger in prison and beaten daily with clubs, was strengthened and consoled in a vision by his priest Calepodius, who earlier had accomplished martyrdom: who, placed in that prison, cured a certain soldier, Privatus by name, both of the pain and filthiness of sores and likewise of unbelief. Hearing this, Aexander had that very soldier worn out with lead-weighted scourges: but he had the blessed Callistus cast headlong through the window of a house and plunged into a well with a rock tied to his neck, and then he filled up the well with old rubbish. But after seventeen days, [Callistus'] priest Asterius, coming at night with clerics, raised up the body and buried it in the cemetery of Calepodius, on October 14.'
