IV Kl. Feb. Scriptum in gestis beati papae Marcelli.
'29 January. At Rome, in the time of Diocletian, the feast of Sts Papias and Maurus, soldiers, who, seeing the constancy of the martyrs Saturninus and Sisinnius, converted to the faith, and immediately it was ordered by Laodicius, prefect of the city, that the holy men's mouths, by which they were confessing Christ, should be pounded with rocks, and that they should be thrust into prison: there they were baptised by Pope Marcellus. Led back out again after twelve days, [Laodicius] ordered them to be thrown to the ground and beaten my clubs, then lifted up from the ground and beaten with scourges with leaden balls attached until they breathed their last. John, a priest, collecting their bodies at night, buried them on the via Numentana at the fountain of blessed Peter, where he would perform baptisms. It is written in the deeds of the blessed Pope Marcellus.'
