Summary:
Florentius prayed to God for consolation in his solitude. God sent a bear to serve him. Florentius ordered the bear to act as a shepherd for a small flock of sheep. Each day the bear cared for the sheep, returning when Florentius ordered.
Monks of the monastery became jealous of the renown this miracle brought, so they killed the bear. In anger, Florentius hoped that the monks would suffer before they died. They all suffered painfully from leprosy before dying. According to Gregory, this was done by God to show Florentius the danger of speaking in rash anger.
Another time, a deacon approached Florentius’ dwelling, which was surrounded by snakes. Florentius prayed and the snakes died. Birds then carried the snakes away.
