Augustine of Hippo, Sermon 335
[In natali martyrum
'On the birthday of some martyrs']
1. Quoniam dies sanctorum martyrum est, unde potius aliquid delectet nos dicere, nisi de gloria ipsorum? Adiuuet nos dominus martyrum, quia ipse est corona eorum.
'Since it is the feast of the holy martyrs, what could it give us more pleasure than to talk about their glory? May the Lord of the martyrs assist us, because He is himself their crown.
In what follows Augustine refers to the martyrs and their sufferings, but does not name any specific martyr, place of martyrdom or form of cult.
