E02935: Gregory of Tours, in his Miracles of Martin (1.38), recounts how people suffering from fevers lie in the church all day, and are healed when they drink a potion mixed with dust from the tomb of *Martin (ascetic and bishop of Tours, ob. 397, S00050). Paulus, a possessed man, who, wishing to kill himself, threw himself from a height in the same church, but landed unharmed; all in Tours. Written in Latin in Tours (north-west Gaul), 573/576.

Vel quid ego de energumenis et frigoriticis referam, quibus si vere fuerint parcitas et fides coniunctae, mox miniculante patrono, cunctae submovententur insidiae. Sic multi ex frigoriticis, dum vi febris pessimae quatiuntur, tota die inter altare et sanctum tumulum decubantes, ad vesperum autem haustum ex beato sepulchro pulvere, continuo promerenture accipere sanitatem. Nam Paulus inerguminus, qui legionem daemonum dicebatur habere, insistente inimico, machinam, quae sanctae camerae erat propinqua, conscendens, dixisse fertur: 'Vasculum quod exustus inhabito'. Et praecipitans se deorsum, ita beati virtute leviter in pavimentum depositus est, ut nullum membrorum corpusculi damnati conlideret.
'And what will I say about the possessed and the fevered. If abstinence and faith are truly joined, soon all treacheries are removed with the assistance of their patron. Hence many of these people suffering from chills lie for the entire day between the altar and the holy tomb while they are shaken by the force of a virulent fever; but at vespers they drink [a potion mixed with] dust from the blessed tomb and immediately deserve to receive their health. For Paulus was a possessed man who was said to have a legion of demons. At the instigation of the Enemy he climbed onto the rafters that were near the holy ceiling (machinam, quae sanctae camerae erat propinqua) and is said to have said: 'Let the vessel perish that I, on fire, inhabit.' He threw himself down, but through the power of the blessed [Martin] he was set on the pavement so lightly that he bruised none of his doomed body’s limbs.'
